CalendarSaturday, May 10, 3 PM. Spring Wildflower Hike in the Grand Traverse Commons. The Commons is a large hilly area with many trails through woods and fields. Richard Fidler will lead us on a wildflower hike when early spring flowers will just be showing themselves, Salors Britches and many more early flowers. Dick Fidler, well known local docent and historian, knows them all! We will meet at 3 PM behind the TBA building for the hike. Orchard Beach Trail and Lake Bluff Audubon House, Manistee.Join us as we visit the Orchard Beach Trail just outside of Manistee. This trail winds through a variety of tree species including beech, hemlock, maple, jackpine; as well as through open meadows, rolling hills; a large stand of white birch and views of Lake Michigan. We'll head to the Lake Bluff Audubon House, have a picnic lunch and explore the beauty of this historic site. High, sandy bluffs at this 72-acre site offer a picturesque view of the Lake Michigan shoreline and surrounding countryside. A gently rolling nature trail meanders through open field, forest, and wetland areas. The yard of the Lake Bluff Center is graced with an arboretum. Two Michigan state champion trees are found here--Michigan's largest giant sequoia and it's largest sycamore maple. Meet at Honor Family Market at 9:00 am to carpool. Hike begins at 10:15. Bring a picnic lunch and water thermos. Please note: No dogs are allowed at Lake Bluff. Call Monica to RSVP by Thursday, May 8th. Sunday, June 1, 12 noon, North Country Trail Hike. Grab your camera, canteen, trail mix and hiking boots and join us as we hit the trail...the North Country trail! We'll meet at the Dilling Road Access near Brethren, MI for a 5 mile hike. Lake Michigan Recreation Area, South of Manistee.Grab your tent, sleeping bags and binoculars for our first camping trip of the summer! Arrive Friday afternoon or early evening (depending on your schedule) set up camp, and take a short hike on Porter Creek Trail. Saturday we will hike one or more of the many trails available to us. Pot luck campfire dinner Saturday night. A Sunday morning hike is optional before pulling up camp and heading home. Call Monica to RSVP BY TUESDAY, JUNE 10th.
