Forests/Public Lands:
State Park Funding

Our Position: support
Bill Number: HB 4677-4678
Sponsor: Rep. Rebekah Warren and Rep. Arlan Meekhof
Legislative Session: 2009-10

The Recreational Passport Proposal is a package of bills developed by a citizen's State Park advisory committee to secure funding for Michigan's State Parks. The proposal would add a $10 fee on to Michigan vehicle registrations, which would in turn give all Michigan drivers unlimited access to Michigan's State Parks. The proposal would ensure that Michigan's Parks continue to operate. Without the bills, the State's budget shortfalls will likely result in park closures.

Status

Action on these bills is currently stalled as leaders in the House and Senate try to reconcile different versions of the bills. One main sticking point is whether people should be allowed to opt-out, or opt-in to the program.
