John Muir's advice to "...climb the mountains and get their good tidings," has been followed by Sierra Club members since 1892. Each year thousands of persons of all ages go on Sierra Club trips. The Club's outings program is organized at three levels: National/International, Regional/Chapter, and Local:
National and International trips literally cover the Earth; from China and Nepal to Europe and the Amazon. Closer to home you can find trips to our national parks and wilderness areas such as the Rockies and Alaska.
Chapter outings take you to the special places in Michigan, like Isle Royale, the wilderness areas of the Upper Peninsula, and the scenic shores of the Great Lakes.
Group outings include backpacking, basecamping, canoe trips, ski trips, bicycle trips, service trips, trail building, and day hikes. Group outings are scheduled all over Michigan, surrounding states and nearby Ontario. Whether you're looking to enjoy the outdoors for a few hours, a day, a weekend, or a week, you'll find something to please you.
A schedule of Huron Valley Group outings is published in the Lookout, the group newsletter; in the Mackinac, the state chapter newsletter; and in the Calendar on this website.
Sierra Club outings are kept small to promote friendship and to minimize impact on the environment. Where there is a fee for a trip, it only pays expenses and equipment maintenance. All camping trips use a "common commissary" for meals and everyone is expected to carry a share of the group equipment and help prepare meals.
